De Queen's Hwy. 70 West Sportsplex received the Best Facility Award for 2002 from the Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association.

The sportsplex is located on Highway 70 West and Home Run Drive. It has two 200-foot youth fields, one 250-foot softball field, one 325-foot boys majors field, a full concession stand suitable for use year-round, and baseball and softball batting cages.

The sportsplex also has a quarter-mile paved and lighted walking trail Other facilities include playground equipment for seven-to-14-year olds and toddlers and two picnic pavilions.

The De Queen Sportsplex pavilion is a 30-foot by 70-foot shelter with 10 picnic tables. There are restroom facilities available and cabinet usage inside the pavilion. There is a $25 fee to reserve the pavilion for private parties; otherwise, it is open to the public.

Herman Dierks Park

Herman Dierks Park is a 45-acre park located at 613 East Hayes and Lakeside Drive. It consists of one 200-foot Little League baseball and softball field, one 30-foot by 70-foot shelter house pavilion for groups, picnic areas, outdoor basketball courts, playground equipment, a quarter-mile lighted walking trail with benches and two lighted tennis courts.

Herman Dierks Community Building is located in Herman Dierks Park. This 40-foot by 80-foot building has eight folding tables and 100 folding chairs. It is available to rent for private use. Rates are $100 for parties and $50 for a reunion or meeting. It must be rented and paid for in advance. To rent the community building, contact Karen Atkins at 870-642-4140.

Knife-making Class
Al Lawrence at Riverside Machine Shop on Stilwell Avenue will host a blacksmith-knife-making seminat on Thursday, March 8, at 5 p.m. This seminar is held monthly and it is free. For information, contact Lawrence at 870-642-7643.
Public Planning Meeting

The City of De Queen is asking for suggestions on ways to encourage building and remodeling in the city. Jim Von Tungeln of Urban Planning Associates in Little Rock will be in De Queen on Thursday, Feb. 23, to look at specific land issues, hear public comments and meet with the Planning Commission and City Council at 5:30 p.m. A public meeting will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Cultural Awareness Center. The joint city council, planning commission meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in De Queen City Hall.

Chamber Banquet
The annual membership banquet for the De Queen-Sevier County Chamber of Commerce has been scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the De Queen High School auditorium. The silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Chamber President Angie Walker will hand the duties to incoming president Rafael Figueroa.

The City of De Queen has implemented a $25 recording fee at Red Men Cemetery in order to be able to keep burial information up to date. For details, click here.
