ROTARY CUP – De Queen Senior Jace Stephens was named the recipient of the 2011 De Queen Rotary Cup. The ceremony on Dec. 5 was the 75th year the cup has been awarded to a local athlete. Stephens rolled up 1,100 yards rushing and 500 yards in pass receptions during the 2011 season. He plans to attend the University of Arkansas and major in pre-med. City makes extra payment
The De Queen City Council voted Tuesday evening to make an additional $200,000 payment on a Rural Development loan used to build the city's new waste water treatment plant. The money for the payment is from leftover funds in the 2011 city budget.
Blackwell wins scholarship
Brenna Blackwell, a senior computer engineering major from De Queen, has been awarded the Jack and Jesse Morris Scholarship at the University of Arkansas College of Engineering. The $2,000 scholarship is given to a student with financial need who graduated from a Sevier County high school and is majoring in one of a specified list of courses. Blackwell graduated from De Queen High School in 2002.
Girl Scout cookies

Girl Scouts in the area will soon be selling cookies as part of the Girl Scout Cookie Program. January 2012 marks the beginning of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. Girls will begin taking orders for their new "cookies with a mission" on Jan. 14 and continue through Jan. 29.

 

Chamber Banquet
The annual membership banquet for the De Queen-Sevier County Chamber of Commerce has been scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the De Queen High School auditorium. The silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Chamber President Angie Walker will hand the duties to incoming president Rafael Figueroa.
iPads in Education
Students in the De Queen School District's special education program will get a surprise when they return from the Christmas break: brand-new iPads for each student in the program. Since their launch in 2010, iPads have topped the "must-have" lists for gadget fans across the world. Now the De Queen School District is introducing them as the latest tool to help teach children with learning disabilities.

The City of De Queen has implemented a $25 recording fee at Red Men Cemetery in order to be able to keep burial information up to date. For details, click here.
